Urinary catheter removal

This plastic tube is held in-place by a fluid filled balloon within the bladder. This is often left in for a number of days for different reasons and allows the urine to pass through it.

This can be removed at home by cutting across the section shown below, which will deflate the balloon, allowing the catheter to come out. (After the tubing is cut, there will be a rush of fluid coming out of the cut end).

We recommend doing this in the shower in the morning, and just letting the tube fall out after the balloon deflates. It should come out easily with no resistance. If there is any resistance then you should contact our office to help with removal.
